Grok is now available for free on X — here are 3 things to try with the AI chatbot

Grok, the AI chatbot integrated into X, is now free to some users as part of an experimental rollout. Previously, only users with an $8/month X Premium subscription had access. This change follows the recent release of Grok 2.

Created by Elon Musk’s company xAI, Grok has become a popular AI tool, known for its ability to analyze images, generate visuals, and pull in real-time data—especially helpful for following news and trending topics.

App researcher Nima Owji notes that Grok is also getting a new logo along with its free access. However, free users will face usage limits, similar to those for free ChatGPT users, including restricted image generation.

How to access Grok?

Grok, the AI chatbot built into X, is now accessible directly within the platform. To use Grok, simply sign in to X, find the Grok logo, and click it to start a chat. The chatbot can even analyze specific posts or accounts, offering insights on demand.

Recently, xAI also opened an API for Grok, so developers can now integrate it into their apps. As a result, platforms like Poe and Perplexity now offer Grok as an option for starting a chat—making access easier without needing an X account. If you’re already on X, however, Grok access may soon be added to your account.

1. Rate my desk

Want honest feedback? Grok can rate your desk—or any space. Just send a photo and ask, “Rate my setup.” It might surprise you with a blunt opinion!

For example, I got a “7 out of 10” and suggestions to improve my lighting and backdrop. Grok called my setup “practical, with room for aesthetic upgrades.”

Grok’s live internet access lets it keep up with the latest on X. One suggested use for the chatbot is to show you the day’s trending headlines, and you can dive deeper by asking it to pull up X posts with various perspectives on each story. 3. Make an image

Grok also includes Flux AI, a model for generating images in different styles, from photorealistic to anime and cartoon. While free access might be limited to a certain number of images each month (similar to ChatGPT), Grok still offers unique flexibility. You can refine prompts as you chat, making it easy to adjust images to fit exactly what you envision.
